Sanctuary of the Holy Trinity
Also called Saint Maria Liberatrice (she who frees) in memory of a miracle that happened in 1320; the first building was erected in the 13th century and enlarged a century later, with further renovations during the years.
The church we see today dates back to 1727 when it was completely redesigned by the Roman architect G.B. Gazzale ; the impressive neo-baroque façade leads you into a basilica with three naves terminating with a cupola. Among the works conserved in the sanctuary is the blessed portrayal of Saint Maria Liberatrice (14th century) attributed to Donato d’Arezzo, better known as Bonavenere, the Deposizione di Cristo (16th century) by the Flemish painter Arrigo de Malined, Saint Tommaso of Villnova (1795) by Domenico Corvi, and the Holy Trinity (1651) by Roman painter Fabrizio Chiari.
Passing the sacristy we reach the Renaissance cloister (1514) with a portico frescoed with Episodes of the life of Saint Agostino (17th century) and in the loggia adjoined to the church, other frescoes taken from the church of Saint Agostino which was destroyed during W.W. II.
