This spacious piazza gets its name from the impressive Rocca (Fort) built in 1354 by the Spanish Cardinal Egidio Albornoz to defend its possessions.
The fort was remodelled several times throughout the centuries by different popes (Pope Pio II, Pope Giulio II, Pope Paul III) and the National Archaeological Museum was recently remodelled as well.
The fountain in the piazza was done by G. Malanca in 1576 by the design of Vignola and after being destroyed by bombing it was excellently restructured using its original pieces.
