The seat of the municipal of Viterbo, this building saw its first phase of construction around 1200 but what we can admire today, is fruit of a re-elaboration of the entire voter’s square and the buildings in it from the Renaissance era, beginning from 1460.
The façade of the palace presents an elegant and airy portico with 9 arcades. Two different orders of windows – on the first floor Guelf, and on the second, arched and a large coat of arms of Pope Sisto IV della Rovere (14711484).
The main door leads into an internal garden with a great view on the Faul Valley, enriched by an elaborate fountain with lions, from 1626, designed by Caparozzi.
On the first floor the Municipal Chapels are found with a canvas by B. Cavarozzi portraying “The Visitation” (1622), the Hall of the Madonna della Quercia, with frescoes tied to the history of the sanctuary, Regia Hall, decorated with wall frescoes depicting episodes relative to the origin of the city (late 16th century) done by B Croce and a ceiling with a painting of the “Veduta”, done by two Viterbo locals, T. Ligustri and L. Nucci, the Hall of Council which still contains 16th stalls and a 15th century vaulted ceiling with frescoed walls by the master Teodoro Siciliano in 1558.
In the new wing of the palace we find the Hall of Matrimonies, also called Rose Hall, where, besides precious furnishings, there is a copy of “Sposolizio della Vergine” by Lorenzo from Viterbo from the original done by Pietro Vanni (19th century) and “ il Sacrificio di Polissna” by D. Corvi (18th century), Also in the new wing, the Hall of Passages with painings by G. Torriani (1789) and the Hall of Aurora with a depiction of Aurora on the ceiling, done by Felice Ludovisi.
